Proposition - This morning we are going to learn about four responses to the crucifixion. We will see 1) the roman soldiers, 2) the bystanders, 3) the religious leaders, and 4) the robbers response.
Interrogative question - What is your response to the crucifixion?
Notice the commands -
vs. 40 - “save...”
vs. 40 - “come down...”
vs. 42 - “come down...”
vs. 43 - “rescue...”

1. The Roman soldiers response to the crucifixion - vs. 35-37

Matthew 27:35–37 NASB95
35 And when they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments among themselves by casting lots. 36 And sitting down, they began to keep watch over Him there. 37 And above His head they put up the charge against Him which read, “THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
What is Crucifixion?
What are the Soldiers doing during the crucifixion?
What is the purpose of putting up the charge?
1 Peter 2:21–25 (NASB95)
21 For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, 22 who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth; 23 and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; 24 and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. 25 For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.
Isaiah 53:9 NASB95
9 His grave was assigned with wicked men, Yet He was with a rich man in His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.
2 Corinthians 5:21 NASB95
21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

2. The bystanders response to the crucifixion - vs. 38-40

Matthew 27:38–40 NASB95
38 At that time two robbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left. 39 And those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”
What do you think that the people were doing as they walked by Jesus?
What would you have done?
What do you think the words “wagging their heads” means?

3. The religious leaders response to the crucifixion - vs. 41-43

Matthew 27:41–43 NASB95
41 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying, 42 “He saved others; He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him. 43 He trusts in God; let God rescue Him now, if He delights in Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ”
Who are the chief priests?
Who are the Scribes?
Who are the Elders?
What do you think was the purpose of what they said?

4. The robbers response to the crucifixion - vs. 44

Matthew 27:44 NASB95
44 The robbers who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him with the same words.
What do you think that the robbers were say?
Why might they have said that?
SO WHAT?
Friends - What have you done with the crucifixion?
